Specialized Environments
The Utility world of today relies on increasingly complex communications solutions to operate efficiently and safely. Utilities depend upon timely information for command and control of their various networks including (but not limited to) generation (or production) transmission, distribution, quality, reliability, safety, load balancing, billing, outage notification and restoration. These requirements for information span electric, gas, water, wastewater, stormwater, irrigation, steam, pipelines systems and other associated industries within the vertical generally referred to as “Utilities”.

DataRemote keenly understands the unique requirements for reliability, accuracy and failover as well as the financial implications of maintaining equipment over long periods of installed operation and life. Faced with technology upgrade requirements, Utilities must often juggle the availability of suitable mediums for carrying information within the installed technology. Legacy equipment often has long life cycles due to regulatory requirements for capitalization, amortization and rate base recovery. Additionally, installed equipment cannot be easily changed due to the in-service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operational requirements demanded by the very nature of the business. DataRemote has pioneered the ability to interface legacy command and control protocols with the state of the art technologies available. The concept of Smart Grid and the Utility centric Internet of Things (IoT) world have brought increased abilities to drive production, transmission, distribution and quality to new levels of efficiency. Coupled with the increased safety and reliability created by faster and more diverse communications networks, utilities today are able to deliver more with less.DataRemote offers a full line of Utility grade cellular and radio communications solutions to meet the requirements of the industry.

Command and Control

Utilities increasingly rely on Supervisory Control and Data Accusation (SCADA) networks to view, operate, command and control the various disparate systems necessary to deliver electricity, gas, water and steam and petroleum to industry, commercial enterprises and consumers. SCADA generally refers to any centralized system engaged in monitoring or controlling various networks involved in all aspects of production, delivery, safety and quality and use of a commodity. The ability to control entire sites, complexes or networks of various systems is the basis for SCADA. Many control functions can be automated. But, SCADA also provides for direct control of these systems when human intervention is necessary or critical. DataRemote understands the critical nature of these systems and has engineered our solution structure to address the reliability, safety and interoperability demanded by Utility grade SCADA. DataRemote has built our business on providing highly secure, robust, reliable and interoperable systems to meet the demands of the industry.

DataRemote has seen the evolution of communications and SCADA networks evolve from early analog direct wire systems through the era of analog tone, analog in band FSK signaling, analog in and out of band signaling, serial data streams, digital data streams DS0, T1 and other TDM systems and radio systems including cellular. The evolution has occurred in stages all leading to where we are now with the IoT, cloud based, internet flexible communications network.

  • First generation: “monolithic”

    Early SCADA systems relied upon small localcomputer systems. Common network services came much later. As a result, SCADA systems had no connectivity with other systems and operated mostly independently. The communication protocols used were strictly proprietary. Redundancy was achieved by using a back-up computer to beused in the event of failure of the primary computer.

  • Second generation: “distributed”

    SCADA command and control moved into a world where information was shared or distributed across local area networks to provide for redundancy or multiple access points to share information and control systems. This brought about near real time sharing of information. The network protocols used were still not standardized. Information security of the SCADA network was not always in the forefront.

  • Third generation: “networked”

    Similar to a distributed architecture, SCADA networks can be inter-connected through communication protocols. Using distributed architecture, SCADA systems can operate in parallel, with a single supervisor. This permits a more cost effective solution in larger systems.

  • Fourth generation: “Internet of things”

    With the almost ubiquitous availability of cloud computing and storage, SCADA systems have adopted IoT as a medium and architecture to control and improve infrastructure costs while simplifying the maintenance and integration aspects of the network. SCADA systems can now report in near real-time and using cloud environments. This also provides for a more readily comprehensible and managed security envelopethan what wastypicallyfound in many decentralized SCADA networks.

DataRemote is well positioned to assist in network transitions, interfacing legacy equipment with Industrial rated hardware and software solutions that recognize industry best practices while providing for efficient cost containment and high security. Our ability to manage legacy protocols and unique interfaces found in Utilities, makes DataRemote ultimately qualified to serve the industry. We pioneered “moving data over wireless.”

Manufacturing with Process Control

Specialized Environments
The Manufacturing world of today relies on complex communications solutions to operate efficiently and safely. Manufacturers depend upon timely information in order to operate increasing complex production facilities. The systems used forthis so called “command and control” may span the operationsof their multiple networks. Process control is extensively used throughout the industry and enables mass production of consistent products, functions and outcomes from continuously operated processes. Such operational control includes managing and operating in multiple and diverse industries such as oil refining, paper manufacturing, chemical production, automobile manufacturing, airplane and aerospace industry processes, machinery operation, industrial fabrication, agriculture, power plants, physical security functions, transportation and many other applications. Process control enables automation by which a small staff of operating personnel can quickly, consistently and safely operate complex process from a central control location.
Process control is an Engineering discipline that deals with multiple systems, mechanisms, protocolsand architectures. All of these systems are intended to operate, control and maintain output or operations within specific parameters or processes to deliver the desired result. These functions control or operate infinite applications and activity that spans a range of everything from the speed of the process or production to regulating operating temperatures to managing basic input/output quantities. Process control touches almost every aspect of any automated or semi-automated process. Remote starting or stopping, valve controls, pressure controls and current status are all typical forms of control that require connectivity and platforms to manage. DataRemote has built our business on servicing the communications needs of these disparate and complex systems, protocols, architectures and platforms. DataRemote has developed and integrated communications solutions to match the environments presented by the functional and operational demands of the systems in use.
These systems carry many different names and functions. Sometimes these systems are referred to by another name use by many Utility Industry customers. That term is: Supervisory Control and Data Accusation (SCADA). SCADA is one of many tools that can be used while working in an environment where operational duties need to be monitored remotely through communication instead of locally. These systems can be automated to operate without intervention, provide remote control or can simply indicate status. The depth of control is driven by the industry or process requirement for a desired outcome.
DataRemote keenly understands the unique communications requirements for reliability, accuracy and failover as well as the financial implications of maintaining equipment over long periods of installed operation and life. Faced with technology upgrade requirements, businesses must often juggle the availability of suitable mediums for carrying information within the installed technology. Legacy equipment interface requirements can sometimes complicate change. DataRemote is skilled at recognizing these situations and positioned to offer tailored solutions via our stable of technology partners, our engineering and integration skills and our own manufacturing capabilities. DataRemote has pioneered the ability to interface legacy command and control protocols with the state of the art technologies available. The concept of the so called “Internet of Things” (IoT) has brought increased abilities to drive production, transmission, distribution and quality to new levels of efficiency. Process Control systems can be coupled with the increased productivity, safety and reliability created by faster and more diverse communications networks. DataRemote can assist operators and users to be in a position to harness the IoT ecosystem thereby creating the opportunity to be able to deliver increased efficiency, often at a lower cost than traditional wireline based analog technology. DataRemote offers a full line of Industrial grade cellular and radio communications solutions to meet the requirements of the industry.
Types of functions using process control:

  • Discrete– Typically found in many manufacturing, motion and packaging applications. Such environments may incorporate robotic assembly and machinery to complete the process or task. Examples of Discrete function are typically found in automotive production. For the most part, Discrete functions involves the production of individual pieces of product.
  • Batch – Typically found in processes that require quantities of raw materials to be combined in specific ways for particular durations to produce an intermediate or end result. One example is the production of adhesives and glues, which normally require the mixing of raw materials with heatfor a period of time to form a quantity of end product.
  • Continuous– Typically found in systems represented through variables that are consistent or uninterrupted. An example of Continuous process is the control of the water temperature in manufacturing a product. Other examples involve production of fuels, chemicals and plastics.
  • Hybrid– Typically applications having elements of discrete, batch and continuous process control are often called hybrid applications.

DataRemote is well positioned to assist in network transitions, interfacing legacy equipment with industrial rated hardware and software solutions that recognize industry best practices while providing for efficient cost containment and high security. Our ability to manage legacy protocols and unique interfaces found in Manufacturing, makes DataRemote ultimately qualified to serve the industry. We pioneered “moving data over wireless.”

Legacy Network Convergence

Network convergence

Network convergence refers to the provision of telephone, video and data communication services within a single network. In other words, one pathway is used to deliver all forms of communication. The process of Network Convergence has been mainly driven by development of technology and customer demand. The goal of such integration being to deliver better services, lower prices and increased interoperability to consumers. Users are able to access a wider range of services and choose complementary devices and associated services from among more service providers. DataRemote views Legacy Network Convergence as an opportunity to adopt new business models while offering innovative services to an ever increasing global marketplace. DataRemote views one key element of success as providing the capability to interface or match existing “legacy” devices with the world of the digital Internet of Things (IoT). We have continued to provide unique and innovative solutions matching the analog world with the digital world of communications. This focus has allowed customers to maintain current legacy devices and enjoy the benefits of the newer network protocols and services.
analog world with the digital world of communications. This focus has allowed customers to maintain current legacy devices and enjoy the benefits of the newer network protocols and services.

Pathways are available to transmit voice, video signals and data to homes and business. In the past, it is restricted to communicating by wire line. Two-way communication has been limited to voice and text by the limited availability of bandwidth and by the availability of spectrum.
In the telecommunications world, convergence has come to mean a moving towards the use of one medium as opposed to manipulation of all forms of information including voice, data and video across all types of networks instead of carrying information separately within distinct networks. In the DataRemote view of the convergent network, different forms of information can be re-configured to provide better, more flexible services to the user. The DataRemote portfolio of solutions accomplishes these tasks nicely.

Convergence is about services and about new ways of doing business and of interacting with society. Convergence can be categorized in the following ways:

1. The first or Basic Convergence is the combination and connection across platforms and networks, which allows several types of networks to connect with each other within certain common standard and protocol. DataRemote has built deep understanding of this tier of convergence and has solutions available to meet both legacy and new customer demand.

2. The second view of convergence is with telecommunication services, allowing users to use a single network to provide several communication services that traditionally required separate networks. DataRemote has engineered our offerings to insure capability.

3. The third view is market convergence. The convergent network will stimulate activity, innovation and collaboration among applications and solutions. Digital technology allows both traditional and new communication services – whether voice, data, sound or pictures – to be provided over many different networks. DataRemote pioneered “moving data over wireless”. It is in that spirit that we continue meeting and exceeding our customer’s expectations.

Benefits of Convergence include:

1.Reduced cost

Many of the costs associated with separate networks, such as the costs of separate equipment and facilities, can be avoided;

2. Greater coverage

With a converged network, the full set of services can be provided over the entire network (the union of the network segments) as opposed to full service being limited the intersection of the service-specific networks;

3. Easier interoperability

Convergence facilitates interoperability among the networks of different carriers, which further expands the effective coverage area;

4.Common user interface

A common user interface and a common access method could be provided for all services.
